CHARACTER NAME: Katherine “Kitty” Pryde, aka Shroud.
SERIES: Ultimate Marvel, that would be Earth-1610.
CHRONOLOGY:
CLASS: Hero/Anti-Hero. It’s complicated.
BACKGROUND:
Kitty comes from Earth-1610, also known as the Ultimate Universe, an alternate universe in Marvel comics. Born a mutant out of two seemingly regular humans (although his father is never shown), Kitty grew up as any other normal teenager would, making friends and going to school, as well as trying to sneak out with her friends once or twice without telling her mother. Her life was all but normal until her mutant gene activated, initially making her phase through things (and things she was holding phase through her) without control, usually ending in the sewers underground and even with pieces of clothes or personal objects like her cell phone missing. Seeing as how the problems that her powers caused were only increasing, her mother decided to contact Xavier and enroll Kitty on the school, with hopes that she could learn how to control her power; Kitty’s mother was very strict in taking care of her daughter though, and made Xavier promise she wouldn’t be put in any kind of danger, which was something that greatly disappointed Kitty upon arrival, as she got to see how the rest of the mansion residents participated in either missions or special tasks assigned by Xavier, while she was only allowed to do Power Practice.
Time passed lazily on the mansion, and soon enough Kitty managed to attain a greater degree of control over her powers, freely phasing through objects with ease, and staying solid without problems; this made her obviously bored, which prompted her to sneak into the Blackbird with both Cyclops and Wolverine when they were both sent to check some unusual activity on Genosha, where she was discovered once they arrived and was too late to do anything about it. Xavier called her, announcing her that she was to quit the school immediately after she came back, and to sit and wait for the two men to be done with their business –she had already tried to follow them, but was chased off by Wolverine-. Kitty went and tried to follow them again, only to accidentally save the pair as she phased through the machine that had captured them, causing its circuits to explode. Upon the chaos it caused she and Wolverine managed to escape, with Kitty being unaware of the fact it had been Logan who had let Scott fall.
Because of her actions in order to help the pair, Xavier not only allowed Kitty to stay, but to become an active asset in the team, blatantly going against her mother’s wishes. Kitty would then go in several missions with the X-Men until these were framed for faking Magneto’s death and Xavier was imprisoned, which forced them to hide from the Government after Magneto resurfaced. The mutant terrorist would eventually contact them and offer them to join him, seeing as how they had no chance of survive without him, but in turn they contacted S.H.I.E.L.D and coordinated an attack on Magneto’s base, defeating and incarcerating him, but not before he caused a nuclear meltdown in Miami, although they managed to contain it. She would later meet Spider-Man when she was sent along with Storm and Jean to pick up a mutant, and invited him to the mansion. Things went awry with the mutant but everything worked out in the end, and it was discovered he wasn’t a mutant in the exact sense of the word. While Kitty showed Spider-Man around, she started to obviously fell for him, and learned of his secret identity when he was given a full physical after nearly getting killed by the not-really-mutant they had picked up. They would meet again when Spider-Man called the X-Men to help him and Wolverine as a faction of Weapon X started to pursue the mutant.
The X-Men would have to deal with the remnants of Weapon-X as they were attacked in the mansion, although Jean neutralized the threat before they could do anything. Taking a more active role, Kitty and the X-Men tracked them down and attacked them, only to find their leader killing them all to avoid giving the X-Men any information, and then killed herself. Kitty would later try to recruit Dazzler, but without success. Kitty was there when the Government presented Emma Frost’s Academy of Tomorrow and when the Sentinel attack almost kills them, but it did manage to kill Beast. She was the first to see Storm’s new look, product of the way she was feeling about Beast’s death. She and several others got benched when Mr. Sinister started to kill mutants, only to be targeted along with the rest of them when Mr. Sinister came around the mansion, but they managed to take him down. Things had been going pretty tense with both Bobby and Rogue, who were on a relationship and Kitty, according to Bobby, was jealous. After he kissed her to shut her up while having an argument, they were caught by Rogue, who ended up caught herself by Gambit and taken to Fenris, from where the team managed to rescue her, although the girl decided to leave with Gambit. Things didn’t work between her and Bobby though, as he was still thinking about Rogue.
Kitty would later hack her way into Mojo TV, a show that claimed to use mutant convicts as prey in a live television show, discovering it was actually the real deal as they watched how the mutant Longshot accused of assassinating a politician. She and a group of X-Men were sent over to Krakoa, the island where the show was being broadcasted from, and set to find the place where Longshot had committed the murder, but they were attacked by the mutant Spiral, who took them by surprise, knocking her out when she tried to help. They would eventually inspect Spiral’s mind and learn that Longshot had actually killed the politician in a crime of passion, as he had been dating Spiral, who was also in a relationship with him. They left Krakoa without him only to learn that other group of X-Men had sneaked out of the mansion and actually managed to save Longshot, which caused problems for them. Bobby and Kitty got in a relationship once and for all, but it was short lived as some time later Kitty discovered Bobby was still thinking about Rogue, and that they kept sending each other mails, so she broke up with him. Soon after this Kitty had to participate in the efforts to keep Alex Summers from breaking her girlfriend Lorna from jail, as her powers had apparently gone crazy, causing her to kill several people, and now was locked with Magneto, who later escaped without anyone knowing.
After that Kitty would finally make up her mind and call Peter (Spider-Man), managing to ask him to hang out with her at the second call. They met after Peter left school and went out on a “date” to the mall, and ended up in a rooftop enjoying the sunset as they talked about their lives and Kitty inquired about his relationship with Mary-Jane, and how Peter felt he couldn’t be with someone who would get hurt because of him. Kitty used this to ask if it would be okay for him to be with someone who couldn’t get hurt ,but quickly chickened at her obvious question and flew away, only to return moments later. They almost kiss right there but a super villain attacked nearby, causing an explosion, which they both went to fight, as Kitty told him she could phase and stay out of danger. Once defeated, they returned to the rooftop, where they finally kissed before Kitty had to return to the mansion via X-Wing, but they would keep seeing and mailing each other constantly, with Kitty actually visiting him the very next day. Kitty would eventually come with another costume, one that kept her identity secret, so she could tag along with Spider-Man as well as Peter Parker without rising suspicions. That same afternoon, after leaving Peter when the X-Wing came to pick her up, Kitty as well as the rest of the mansion residents were captured by mercenaries leaded by Deadpool and sent into Krakoa, with Spider-Man unwillingly tagging along when he got on a X-Wing that Kitty had managed to send back. Peter and Kitty, along with the X-Men, fought Deadpool and his forces, eventually defeating them, although it was all filmed and showed on television.
Because of the media coverage Kitty and Peter became some sort of “It” couple, which further fueled Kitty’s existing doubts about Peter’s willingness to stay in a relationship, although after discussing it they both decided they wanted to stay together. Grounded as she was, Kitty couldn’t see Peter anytime soon though. Kitty would later go on a “crime-fighting date” with Peter, and return to the mansion later that night. She and the rest of the X-Men were influenced by the newly arrived Elliot to accept him and let him stay with them, as well as act as a X-Men without prior training. Under his influence, Kitty flirted with him until he was confronted by Xavier and Nick Fury, and ended up fighting the mutant, who seemingly died when Wolverine put his claws on him. He actually didn’t die, but manipulated reality to make it seem that way, and told Kitty, who was alone in the woods about his plan to leave and explore the world, find a place where he could be alone and think, Kitty didn’t remember anything because then his plans wouldn’t work.
Kitty would later get upset at Peter when this told her about his experience with vampires and how he had relied on Mary Jane and not her; even though Peter considered it made sense since they were not only classmates, but neighbors and childhood friends. Driven by jealously, Kitty remained upset, claiming that Peter was still in love with MJ, and Peter didn’t reply, straining their relationship. Kitty would have to put this aside as she was tasked along with the rest of the X-Men to track down Dazzler, who had been on a coma and now was missing. Once they discovered that Kurt had been the kidnapper, Kitty phased through the ground until she found the sealed cave where he was keeping her, and later tried to help fighting Kurt, who was ultimately subdued by Rogue’s newly emerged powers.
During the whole mess that was the Clone Saga, in which Spider-Man met the several clones that Doctor Octopus had made of him, Kitty remained a spectator for the entirety of it, and only learned of it when she saw the news concerning Mary Jane’s disappearance and S.H.I.E.L.D being all over Peter’s neighborhood. Urging Xavier to take matters into it, the X-Men flew on a cloaked X-Wing to Peter’s house, as they couldn’t interfere in S.H.I.E.L.D matters, and saw how badly damaged Peter’s house was. Searching for them, Xavier found both Peter and Aunt May on the hospital as she had had a heart attack. Realizing that Peter was about to tell her his secret identity, Kitty tried to make Xavier interfere, but he decided against it, after which Kitty left in tears. The next day, as she went to check on him she caught both Peter and MJ making up, which meant they had broken up without really talking about it.
Some time passed, and Kitty had peace to sort her thoughts, although the idea of leaving the X-Men was growing strong. She got stabbed by Cable (a future version of Logan) when she tried to fight him off as he was trying to attack Xavier, and the rest of the X-Men soon joined as well, although Cable managed to escape with Jean as a warrant they would deliver Xavier to him. Kitty was bleeding out from the wound, and Xavier had to control a surgeon and order him to treat her. She once again voiced her intentions of leaving with Storm, who agreed that the mansion had already taught Kitty all it could. The X-Men immediately were confronted by Bishop, who had came from the same future as Cable and had answers; Cable blamed Xavier for his future, which was the result of some sort of apocalypses, and wanted to make sure it wouldn’t come to pass. Trusting Bishop, Xavier sent him with a group of X-Men to fight Cable, as he had stayed on the present. The battle was bloody, with Rogue getting an arm blown, and nearly dying if she hadn’t taken Wolverine’s healing factor. After learning that Xavier had died in an explosion caused by Cable, Kitty positively left the mansion and the X-Men, not assisting to Xavier’s funeral. She left without saying goodbye to anyone but a brief conversation/argument with Bobby.
Kitty would move with her mother and enroll at Peter, MJ, and Gwen’s school, ending up in their same class and sitting right behind Mary Jane, and her status as a mutant and a member of the X-Men, as well as her relationship with Spider-Man gathered much attention. She and Peter talked things through somewhat, seeing how he had never broken up with her, and she was surprised to see that both Peter and Xavier had had the same idea regarding him telling his aunt about his secret identity, putting her in the wrong. It didn’t end well though, and Kitty avoided Peter for some days afterwards. Around this time Kitty got a new costume and kept on doing heroics until she ran into Peter, and helped him take down the Shocker, who was the same villain they had taken down back when they started to date. Later on school they were assigned to take care of a doll baby together as a married couple, and later on Kitty was introduced to Kenny, another classmate of them, for who she started to show interest, apparently going to the movies with him and catching up on her studies with his help. Kitty later aided Spider-Man to escape from the Triskelion after he had been apparently incarcerated, but Carol Danvers, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D told her she wanted to protect him, as Normal Osborn was out and about and a public show of Peter would surely draw him towards them. Receiving notification that he was on the move, Carol “made” them both agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and told them to help them, they couldn’t defeat him, but Peter and Kitty managed to talk and make amends, Kitty would later find out that Peter went and beat Osborn on his own.
Later, Johnny Storm came over to Midtown, and met with Kitty there. They soon were joined by MJ and Peter, as well as Bobby, who had come all the way there to try and make peace with Kitty; it wasn’t easy, but he managed to have her forgive him, and gave her a note that Logan had sent for her, which touched her deeply but she didn’t comment on it. Johnny suggested that everyone gathered to go out to be beach, and that they invited Liz as well, as apparently the first time they had met the girl had freaked out the same way she does about mutants, but Johnny wanted to talk to her. So they all went to the beach and Kitty was present when Liz apparently got caught on fire, although it was just her mutation finally activating; Kitty would learn the next day about Liz being accepted into the X-Men, being slightly angry at the fact she had been accepted while she was no longer with them. When the baby project was over, Peter and Kitty presented their charred rests, as well as the burnt report, since Omega Red had stormed the Bugle and burned the place while doing so, which granted them a passing grade. Kitty was later called by MJ when this saw how Peter got knocked out and apparently kidnapped by the Shocker, and with the help of Captain Quaid, a friend of Logan, managed to get information about Shocker’s whereabouts, which allowed her to find Peter as he had just managed to escape from his restrains and was threatening to kill Shocker, with Kitty being just in time to tell him not to do it. They escaped moments later when Quaid and the police arrived to the scene. Kitty and Peter aided Logan to take down Banshee users, and Kitty had a chance to hug and thank Logan for his note. The three of them discovered that Banshee was based on Wolverine’s DNA, and so it looked like he had consumed it. Logan left soon after to settle things with Xavier.
During the events of Ultimatum, Kitty and company were on their way to visit Johnny when the Ultimatum Wave hit Manhattan; because they were in the elevated L-Train, the wave didn’t reach them, but they witnessed how many people got killed in front of them. Kitty phased Peter through the roof so he could go and help in the city, while she stayed with the rest (MJ, Gwen and Kenny) and took care of them. The group would soon move to a rooftop from where they would be able to stay safe, but MJ ultimately convinced Kitty that she had to find Peter and make sure he was alright, although she had to both punch her and force her to admit she was still in love with him before (because there’s always time for teenage drama). Kitty’s search for Peter lead her to meet Jessica Drew for the first time, although given the situation she was less than amused to meet Peter’s clone. The two of them teamed up to rescue the survivors that were everywhere, taking them to rooftops, and then continued to look for Peter. Kitty and Jessica would find Peter’s mask near the place where Stephen Strange’s house had been, and exploded as the Ultimatum Wave happened, but they couldn’t find a body. Fearing the worst, Kitty returned to Aunt May’s house, where everyone else had headed, and gave her the mask. Soon after Wolverine passed by to give her a box with his belongings, telling her open the box for instructions if something happened to him on his confrontation with Magneto. Kitty was overjoyed when she learned that Peter was alive, but at the same time sad that Wolverine had died in the final battle with Magneto. Kitty later broke in the Triskelion and stole Wolverine’s adamantium bonded arm, the only thing left of him, so it could be buried with the rest of the fallen X-Men, as well as destroy the mansion completely. She then left to meet Jimmy Hudson, who according Logan’s instructions found in the box left with her was his son, and she delivered it to him; together they watched Logan’s holographic message for Jimmy, and she encouraged him to try and pop claws on his own, which he did, and then surprised her by coating them on steal by himself. Kitty was confronted with Jimmy’s mother, and left after stating she had just followed Logan’s will.
Kitty kept going to school, but after the Ultimatum mutants were forbidden to use their powers, so six months later she had created a new secret identity; The Shroud, completely clad in clothes that covered her entirely and disguised her gender, as well as a voice scrambler to make her sound like a man trying to sound like a woman or vice versa. As the Shroud, Kitty took care of some thugs before Spider-Man could. Kitty would try to keep a normal high school life, but the constant harassing of her schoolmates made things complicated, getting her into detention for using her powers to avoid being hit with food and other objects during lunch, and arguing with MJ when this filmed her being harassed without doing anything, for which she destroyed her camera with her powers. Incidentally, Kitty saved MJ later that day when some thugs tired to get her into a car at gunpoint, but didn’t disclose her identity to her when asked, and refused to answer her questions when MJ deduced The Shroud was about her own age, using MJ’s distraction by the authorities showing up to vanish. Kitty was surprised to find Bobby on her doorstep, as his parents had kicked him out for being a mutant, and allowed him to stay in her house. Later that day Kitty investigated a supposed attack of the Hulk on Queensboro Bridge, but it turned out to be Mysterio, who was beating down Spider-Man, she quickly aided him and the two of them managed to make him flee the scene. Not letting Peter touch her, Kitty quickly left the place soon after Mysterio when Peter wasn’t paying attention due to finding a piece of Mysterio’s costume and inspecting it. Kitty had an argument with her mother that night, since she didn’t know Bobby would be staying, and didn’t want him to, as well as the fact the school was trying to get Kitty expelled, even though she hadn’t done anything to anyone. In the end, they Prydes decided to take Bobby over the Parkers, where Aunt May agreed to take care of him, adding him to the list consisting on Gwen and Jonny Storm. Kitty stayed over for pizza with the Parkers and company, where they discussed how to keep them all in a relatively low profile, which ended up with Bobby getting most of his hair cut and Johnny dyeing his black. The next day she was forced to get in her Shroud costume on school as they were attacked by a Spider Slayer created by Mysterio, who followed Peter through a blood sample left on Mysterio’s suit after their battle, and she managed to short circuit it with her phasing powers, quickly escaping after Peter asked if she attended to the school as well.
Later, Gwen, Mary Jane and Kitty “teamed up” to force Peter into the girl’s bathroom and give him a much needed haircut, as they had realized the three of them hated the way his hair was turning out after God knows how long of being last cut. While Peter wasn’t entirely satisfied with the results, they certainly were, and so Aunt May. Kitty’s life as a student was to come to and end though, as the next day the principal arrived to her classroom with two federal agents, asking her to stand up and follow them without resisting, only because she was a mutant. Kitty didn’t cooperate, and using the distraction caused by Kenny to escape along with him; they both escaped together, but soon after Kenny would get cold feet about the whole situation and leave her, escaping back home and moving out with his family to Winsconsin. Kitty resurfaced some time later, and accepted to talk with Peter after taking care of some criminals. They went over to his house, where Peter was received as there was a surprise birthday party for him, and Kitty was accepted back into their group of friends, although she didn’t come back to school and didn’t tell them where she was staying. Kitty wasn’t present for the events concerning Peter’s death, and only found out about it like everyone else when she saw the news, having no way to express herself other than donning her Shroud costume and beating some thugs. While she was present at his funeral, Kitty left before it ended, as she couldn’t take being in there. She met up with Bobby and Johnny, who didn’t know where they would stay now that Aunt May was going through losing Peter and his identity being discovered, they couldn’t stay with her anymore. Kitty then decided to accept them where she had been hiding, under the condition of not risking their lives anymore for the sake of others. She then leaded them to the Morlock Tunnels, which had been left abandoned after the Morlocks had been almost entirely wiped out. They settled there in time to listen the news about the American Government creating that mutants, only to find out that Rogue was being in trouble. Despite she had opposed going out to do heroics anymore, and that Bobby and Johnny had both accepted her terms, she ultimately changed her mind and decided to go help her friend.
PERSONALITY:
Kitty Pryde has learned to distrust people instinctively, and to try and look out for herself. She’s independent, strong willed and has grown to be a bit of a loner, although she hasn’t discarded all her sympathies towards others; she’s just a lot more careful about who she interacts with. Coming from a world that is actively trying to hold her against her will merely because she’s alive, and combined with the generalized sentiment that her kind is a danger to the world, Kitty is a bit resentful of regular humans, considering that their biased approach to mutants is one of the reasons things are going to bad for her and her own. Kitty is pretty quick on her feet, and even quicker when it comes to plan ahead, proof that she has learned from the best when it comes to strategies. She’s attentive to detail, and even though she tries to keep a tough exterior she cares deeply about people, whether they care back or not, and despite the fact she voices her decision of quitting heroics she goes and fights to save Rogue even after she stated to herself that there was never too much of a friendly relationship between them. Kitty is a strong leader, but she isn’t entirely comfortable with directing others yet, even when that could cause problems. Her reluctance to fight is connected to her fear of losing more people dear to her, and when the time comes to fight she has so far tried to minimize it as much as possible, with the intention of keeping everyone safe.
Having suffered –and survived- through a lot, Kitty is currently trying to sort out her feelings regarding a number of things, her mind mainly focused on staying out of sight. She has temporally buried her more normal self; the fun loving, easy going talkative girl that managed to charm her way into the X-Men and had none other than Wolverine as a tutor and protector of sorts has been numbed by the repeated trauma that has been her recent life. It’s not lost forever, but going back to how she was won’t be an easy task for her, even if she counts with the help of others. If she were to suddenly end up somewhere she didn’t need to worry about everything that’s being thrown at her, Kitty would most likely reject it, as she can’t help but blame herself for some of the things that happened, and wouldn’t believe herself to be worthy of having an easy life. She has matured before her time, and the person she’s turning into might not be what she had envisioned, which is something that not only bothers her, but terrifies her as well.
Out of the three X-Men, Kitty is the one that probably has changed the most, and that’s saying something considering that Bobby and Johnny’s lives hadn’t been precisely easy as of late. Now more than ever she shows herself as a dependable person, and is starting to change gears from “student” to “teacher” although her young age and inexperience are still holding her down. She needs to have friends next to her more than ever, to remind her who she used to be and that there is still hope for her, but at the same time she wants to keep them safe, which in turn makes her act not always like her friends would expect.
POWER:
Mutant psychology: Kitty is capable of generating a form of molecular repulsion that causes her molecules to move away from and around other molecules as well as condense them. This renders her body ephemeral, allowing her to pass through solid objects, walk on thin air, “glide” or “fly” by sliding in the air, utilize her magnetic distortion to scramble electronic systems, and extend her intangibility to anything she touches, while hyper-dense however she gains invulnerability and super strength.
Cyberpathy: Rather than controlling machines, Kitty can “commune” with the flow of information that comes and goes from cell phones, computers, and whatever device connected to a red of sorts, the Internet being the most obvious one. This ability allows her to “see” phone calls being sent, check her mail without the aid of a computer, and reinforce/encrypt her own messages, among other things.
Dragonkin: Dragons like her, or at least are not driven to immediately kill her in cold blood. She also understands whatever language dragons might/could have, and they understand her in return. She can’t order them around though; she’s just oddly familiar and likeable to them.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
Okay, this?
[ The feed starts abruptly, with Kitty sitting on some table of some café with some drink next to her. It’s ice tea, because is getting hotter around here. She looks a bit perplexed, and a good deal annoyed. ]
This I didn’t see coming. It’s not that I’m complaining but I- I can’t be here. I’m needed back home, and I don’t care things are not, how did that robot put it? how things aren’t moving back home, alright? I’m in this- this mindset, I can’t be having a good time in a New York-not-New York that never got flooded and with people not trying to lock me up because my genes are funny.
And I most certainly don’t deserve it.
[ And then she bites her lower lip. ]
So I need a way out, alright? I promise- I’ll come back. I will. Heck, I’ll bring people with me if needed, but I can’t be here. Not right now.
Um, this is Kitty Pryde, by the way.
[ Well that wasn’t awkward at all. ]
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
“Mommy why isn’t that girl wearing a swim suit?”
Whoever the mom was, Kitty didn’t hear the answer, but she quietly pulled her kid away from the girl that had fallen moments ago from, well, nowhere right to the beach, and not in the sand to be precise. Fully clothed. She didn’t expect that to happen at all, and therefore by the time she phased she was already soaking wet. Grumbling under her breath, Kitty made her way to the shore, making her best attempt to ignore the people that were staring at her. Funny though, some weren’t that surprised. Apparently odd stuff did happen on City. “Ugh, so close. So close!” And then she angrily kicked some waves, which in turn meant she was tangible, and running a perfectly good pair of shoes. “Dammit!”
She had been literally a foot away from phasing her hand on that stupid machine that had dragged her to City; reason stood that if it stopped working someone would show to repair it, and Kitty would have her chance to either talk or fight her way out, but apparently the machine was not only sentient, but pretty damn crafty, as it zapped her all the way across the place, right to the water. “It could have thrown me on a fountain, but nooooo.” Sure, this way she wouldn’t be able to reach it anytime soon, but more than anything, Kitty had no longer any desire to irritate the Porter. Maybe she would be more successful about convincing some of the really smart guys around if she tried again, maybe not.
Once on firm land, Kitty inspected her clothes; at least the phone was still working, and she was holding only some coins. She needed an empty room to phase her clothes out of the water, if that was even possible. It should be possible. Good thing that when you can phase through stuff there’s little that gets in your way. “Note to self, kick Johnny in the head for not telling me about the Porter being a jerk.” Nevermind she hadn’t asked Johnny about it.
FINAL NOTES:
Seeing as how Kitty will do everything in her power to keep her Shroud identity secret, and the phones might complicate that, I was wondering if she could use her cyberpathy to “mask” the information she sends so it doesn’t have a name on it when posted. Pretty much like an anonymous sender, or simply to say “Shroud” as the phone owner.

[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
